Background notes on GLD360

Vaisala has updated its GLD360 lightning detection systems worldwide:

- on June 28, 2023: The V4.1 upgrade improves data quality, especially at high latitudes, differentiation between intra-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning and location accuracy.

- on December 8, 2020: The V4 re-analyses the data collected by the network and corrects the propagation time of the electromagnetic wave for each sensor.

Operating principle of our Thunderstorm warning systems

Based on our real time observations, it is possible to raise the alarm with a site in regard to the imminent approach of a storm so that the risk of lightning strikes on people and property can be mitigated.
The method used involves creating a monitoring area around the site and raising an alarm as soon as the initial lightning strikes are detected in this zone. The site is then informed of when the thunderstorm has ended and activity has stopped within this perimeter.

Locational accuracy ellipses

The ellipse is a statistical indicator based on the measurement errors made by the sensors.

Details relating to the provision of “NSG” by Météorage

To address divergent practices worldwide in the way that lightning density is determined, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) deemed it necessary to establish a common standard in order to harmonise said practices.

IEC/NF EN 62858:2016 aims to establish common rules and identify reliable methods for the establishment of lightning statistics that serve as the basis for lightning risk analysis (LRA).

Performance analysis of the Météorage network in 2015

The video data and electric field recording campaign took place from 16 July to 6 October 2015. A total of 206 observations were recorded across France during 13 storm-chasing missions carried out by Temps d’Orages.

Calculation principle of peak intensity of stroke current

The Météorage network gives an estimate of the intensity of the arc current that flows through lightning strikes that are produced between clouds and the ground and those that remain in the air. This calculation is carried out by the central calculator in real time using the peak magnetic field amplitude measured by the sensors.
